What is an Instagram professional account, and why does LUME Hub need one?
Updated
Quick answer
An Instagram professional account is the account type for people who use Instagram for work: Creator or Business. It unlocks insights, contact buttons and access for official tools. LUME Hub only connects professional accounts, because Instagram does not share insights, messages or publishing for personal accounts with third-party apps.
A professional account is one of Instagram's account types, built for people who use the platform for work. There are two kinds: Creator and Business. Both work with LUME Hub. A personal account, which is the default when you sign up, can't connect.
What is an Instagram professional account?
It's the account Instagram offers to brands, businesses and creators. Instead of a profile just for friends, it adds work features: reach and per-post insights, contact buttons on your profile, a business category, and access for official tools such as LUME Hub to read and manage the account with your permission.
Switching to a professional account is free and done in Instagram's own settings, in the account type area. The exact menu name changes between app versions, but the option is usually called "Switch to professional account".
Personal vs Creator vs Business
| Account type | Best for | Connects to LUME Hub? |
|---|---|---|
| Personal | Personal use, no business features | No |
| Creator | Creators, experts, freelancers | Yes |
| Business | Stores, brands, service providers | Yes |
For LUME Hub, Creator and Business behave the same way: insights, automations and publishing all work. If you're choosing between them only because of LUME Hub, either one is fine, and you can change your mind later in Instagram's settings.
Why does LUME Hub require a professional account?
LUME Hub connects to Instagram through Meta's official business login. Through that route, Instagram only opens professional accounts to apps. That's Instagram's rule, not LUME Hub's. With a personal account, Instagram refuses to share the profile, and the connection stops with a message (in Portuguese) saying the account needs to be professional, Creator or Business.
Once a professional account is connected, LUME Hub can:
- read followers, posts, views and reach in Cockpit Social;
- answer DMs and comments with the rules in Instagram automations;
- publish the posts you schedule from CAPI AI, Videos or the LUME Office.
How to do it in LUME Hub
For DM auto-replies there's one more setting in the Instagram app: Settings → Messages and story replies → Message controls → Allow access to messages. Without it, Instagram doesn't deliver your messages to LUME Hub.

Frequently asked questions
Does an Instagram professional account cost money?
No. Switching to a professional account is free and done in Instagram's own settings. Ads cost money, but that is a separate thing.
Creator or Business: which one should I pick for LUME Hub?
Either works. LUME Hub accepts any professional account, Creator or Business. Pick the one that best describes how you use Instagram.
Will I lose followers or posts if I switch?
Changing your account type does not delete posts or followers. It's a setting in Instagram, and you can switch back to a personal account later.
Do I need a Facebook Page?
Not for LUME Hub. The connection uses Instagram's own login, and the only requirement is a professional account.
