Free email with a custom domain vs a free address: which do you need?
Updated
Quick answer
A custom domain email uses your business name after the @, like you@yourbusiness.com, and requires registering the domain and paying for a service that hosts the email. A free address, like @gmail.com or LAWD Mail's @lawd.me, uses the provider's domain and needs none of that setup.
Anyone starting a business hears they need a "professional email with a custom domain." It isn't always the first step, and it's rarely free. This article explains what a custom domain is, what it takes, and when a free address, like LAWD Mail's @lawd.me, is enough.
What is a custom domain email?
The domain is the part after the @. In an address like you@yourbusiness.com, the domain is yourbusiness.com. Having email on a custom domain means using a domain you own, usually the same as your website, instead of a provider's domain.
It takes two things:
- Register the domain with a registrar. Registration is paid and renewed every year.
- Host the email: pay for a service that sends and receives mail for the domain and set up the DNS records (MX, SPF, DKIM and DMARC).
What is a free email address?
With a free address, the domain belongs to the provider: @gmail.com for Gmail, @outlook.com for Outlook and @lawd.me for LAWD Mail. You only choose the name before the @. There's no domain to register and no DNS to configure: the provider handles it all. The trade-off is that the address carries the provider's name instead of yours, and you can't take the domain with you if you switch services.
Custom domain vs free address compared
| Custom domain | Free address (Gmail, @lawd.me) | |
|---|---|---|
| Address | you@yourbusiness.com | you@gmail.com, you@lawd.me |
| Cost | Domain registration, and usually hosting | Free |
| Setup | DNS and a mail service | None |
| Shows your brand | Yes, your business name | The provider's name |
| Ready in | Hours or days | Minutes |
When a @lawd.me address is enough
LAWD Mail creates free @lawd.me addresses with a 1 GB mailbox, up to 100 sent emails a day, a calendar and 1 GB of files in LAWD Box. It doesn't host your business domain. It's a good fit when you:
- work solo and want to keep work email apart from personal email;
- want a fresh address now, with no phone number and no ads;
- already use LUME Hub and want email, calendar and files on one account.
When your brand has a team, a website and clients who expect your business name in the address, a custom domain is worth it. Nothing stops you from having both: the domain for the business and @lawd.me for everything else.

Frequently asked questions
Does LAWD Mail support my business domain?
No. LAWD Mail creates addresses on the lawd.me domain, like yourname@lawd.me. It doesn't host email for other domains.
Is there free email with a custom domain?
The domain itself costs money (a yearly registration). Some services host a domain's email for free with limits; most charge per mailbox.
Is a @lawd.me address OK for work?
It works for solo professionals who want to separate work email from personal email, with a name, signature and photo. For a brand with a team, a custom domain carries more weight.
Can I have both?
Yes. Many people use a custom domain for the business and a free address for sign-ups and personal use. A LAWD account can also use another email as its sign-in.
