What is an AI agent and how does it work?
Updated
Quick answer
An AI agent is an artificial intelligence program that takes a goal and works on its own to reach it: it plans the steps, uses tools, checks the result and delivers. Unlike a chatbot that only answers, an agent acts. In the LUME Office, each agent has a role, remembers the conversation and stops before risky actions.
An AI agent is artificial intelligence that doesn't stop at an answer: it takes a task and keeps working until it's done. This article explains the idea in simple terms, how it differs from a regular chatbot and how the agents work in the LUME Office.
What is an AI agent, in simple terms?
An AI agent is a program that takes a goal and decides on its own how to get there. It breaks the work into steps, uses tools (reading and editing files, querying a system, writing text or creating an image), checks the result and delivers. If information is missing or the next step is risky, it stops and asks.
An autonomous AI agent is one that keeps going without needing a new message for every step. Autonomous doesn't mean unsupervised: a good agent has clear limits on what it can do alone.
AI agent vs. chatbot vs. AI assistant
| Chatbot | AI assistant | AI agent | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it gets | A question | A request | A goal |
| What it delivers | An answer | An answer or a simple action | Finished work, across several steps |
| Uses tools | Rarely | Some | Yes, several, in sequence |
| Asks for approval | No need | Sometimes | Before risky actions |
In practice the lines blur. The LAWD Assistant, for example, chats, answers questions about your account and creates tasks. The LUME Office agents go further: each one owns a whole area of work.
How an AI agent works
- Takes the request: what needs doing, where, and with what material.
- Plans: decides the steps and what it needs to look up.
- Acts: uses the tools it has been allowed to use.
- Stops when needed: asks for approval before a risky action, or asks for what's missing.
- Delivers and remembers: shows the result and keeps the context for the next request.
How it works in the LUME Office
The LUME Office is LUME's own team of AI agents. Each agent has a fixed role, such as social media manager, video editor, marketing specialist, finance or office assistant, plus an operations director who hands out tasks and checks deliveries.
A few office rules show how a real agent behaves:
- Memory: the agent remembers the conversation from one request to the next, until someone starts a new conversation.
- Queue: if it's busy, a new request waits its turn.
- Approval: risky actions, like publishing a change or installing something, stop at an approval request. Only people with the Approve level can allow them.
- Proposal before posting: the social media agent drafts a post proposal and only schedules it on Instagram after someone with permission approves.
In LUME Hub, you can watch this team in the LUME Office showcase, with each agent's status. People invited to the office send requests as shown in how to send a request to an AI agent.
How to get good results from an AI agent
- Describe the result you expect, not just the topic.
- Give context: who it's for, where it'll be used, the deadline.
- Send the material along, such as a screenshot, brief or file.
- Read what the agent wants to do before approving it. Approving means signing off.
- Keep an eye on progress, as in how to track what your AI agents are doing.
Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between an AI agent and a chatbot?
A chatbot answers one question at a time. An agent takes a task, decides the steps, uses tools such as files and systems, and delivers finished work, coming back to you only when it needs approval or missing information.
Does an AI agent work without supervision?
It depends on how it's set up. In the LUME Office, an agent handles day-to-day work on its own but stops before risky actions and waits for someone with permission to approve.
Are AI agents useful for marketing?
Yes. In the LUME Office, agents plan and schedule Instagram posts, edit videos, read Google and ad numbers and build the content plan.
Can I use the LUME Office agents in my business?
No. They're LUME's own team and aren't for sale. In LUME Hub, you can watch that team at work in the LUME Office showcase.
