30-second summary
- Short-form video editing is cutting a vertical video of a few seconds to a few minutes so that every second earns the next one: a clear hook, no dead air, readable captions and one call to action.
- A fast workflow has six steps: plan the hook before recording, cut silences and mistakes, add captions, place text away from the app's buttons, add music you're allowed to use and export in the platform's format.
- Automatic captions are a starting point, not a finished product. The W3C's accessibility guidance says they need editing, because one missed word can reverse the meaning.
- YouTube says Shorts can be up to 3 minutes with a square or vertical aspect ratio; Instagram's Reels page mentions multi-clip videos up to 3 minutes and says longer reels won't be recommended to new audiences.
- Batch the work: record several videos in one session, then edit them in one pass with the same caption style and template.

Recording a 40-second video takes a minute. Editing it can take an hour: scrubbing the timeline for every filler word and long pause, typing captions by hand, nudging text away from the like button, hunting for a song you're allowed to use. Multiply that by three videos a week and editing becomes the reason you stop posting.
This guide shows how to edit short form videos with a workflow you can repeat every week for Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts and TikTok: what to plan before you record, how to remove silences, how to add captions that are actually accurate, where text should go, what to know about music and length, and which kind of tool fits each task.
What is short-form video editing?
Short-form video editing is cutting a vertical video of a few seconds to a few minutes so that every second earns the next one: a clear hook at the start, no dead air, readable captions and one call to action at the end. The goal is clarity and pace, not effects.
It differs from editing long videos in three ways. The frame is vertical and full-screen on a phone. Most people decide in the first seconds whether to keep watching. And many viewers watch with the sound off, which is why captions and on-screen text carry so much of the message.
How do you edit short-form videos fast?
Edit fast by deciding most things before you record and by using the same template every time. A repeatable workflow has six steps.
- Plan the hook and the ending before you hit record.
- Cut silences, mistakes and repeats (jump cuts).
- Add captions and correct them.
- Place text and graphics where the app's interface won't cover them.
- Add music or sound you have the right to use.
- Export in the platform's format and check it on a phone.
The biggest time saver is batching: record three to five videos in one session, then edit them in one pass with the same caption style, fonts and colors. Decisions you make once don't cost you time again.
How do you plan the hook before you record?
Write the first sentence and the last sentence of the video before you record. The first sentence tells viewers what they'll get; the last tells them what to do next.
Good hooks for service businesses are specific and promise something the viewer cares about: a mistake to avoid, a question your clients ask, a before-and-after. Say it in the first line, not after an introduction. If the video ends with a call to action such as "comment GUIDE and I'll send you the checklist," make sure the delivery is ready; this is how a video turns into a lead, as described in how to get clients from Instagram.
How do you remove silences from a video?
Remove silences by cutting out the pauses between sentences, the false starts and the repeated takes, so that each sentence starts right after the previous one ends. These quick cuts are called jump cuts, and they're the main reason short videos feel fast.
There are two ways to do it:
- Manually. Scrub the timeline, split the clip at the start and end of each pause and delete the gap. It's precise but slow.
- Automatically. Many editors can detect quiet stretches in the audio and cut them for you. It's fast, but you need to watch the result once.
Whatever you use, check three things after the cut: the first syllable of each sentence isn't clipped, pauses you left on purpose (before a punchline or a number) are still there, and the background audio doesn't jump in volume between cuts.
How do you add auto captions to Reels and Shorts?
Generate captions automatically, then read every line and fix the errors before you export. Automatic captions are a draft, not a finished product.
The W3C's Web Accessibility Initiative is direct about this: automatic captions don't meet user needs or accessibility requirements unless they're confirmed to be fully accurate, and you'll need to edit them. Its examples show how small errors change meaning, such as a missed "not" that makes the caption contradict the audio, or "4 to 5 minutes" turning into "45 minutes."
Captions also matter beyond silent scrolling. The W3C notes that they serve people who are Deaf or hard of hearing and others who can't hear the audio, and that some people process written information better than audio.
A quick caption checklist:
- Accuracy. Fix names, brand terms, numbers and negatives first.
- Sync. Each line appears while the words are spoken.
- Readability. Short lines, a few words at a time, high contrast against the background.
- Sound that matters. If a sound is needed to understand the video, describe it.
- Open or closed. Open captions are always displayed and can't be turned off; closed captions can be shown or hidden by the viewer. Burned-in open captions show the same way in every app.
Where should text go on a vertical video?
Keep text and important visuals in the center area of the frame, away from the edges. The top, bottom and right side of a vertical video are where apps place the account name, the caption, the audio label and the like, comment and share buttons.
Before you export, preview the video with the interface on: upload it as a draft or use the app's preview and check that no caption line, price or face sits under a button. Each app's overlay is a little different, so if you post the same video everywhere, design for the most crowded one.
Can you use any music in Reels or Shorts?
No. Use music from the app's own audio library or music you have a license for. Copyrighted music added without permission can lead to claims or restrictions on your video.
YouTube's help on uploading Shorts asks you to make sure any copyright-protected material you use is approved for use on YouTube, and warns that using it can lead to a Content ID claim. Instagram's Reels page points to its audio library, original audio and voiceover. For a business, the safest options are original audio, licensed tracks and sounds the platform itself offers for your account type.
What are the length and format specs for Reels, Shorts and TikTok?
Shoot and edit vertical, keep the video within each platform's limit and check the official page before you rely on a number, because limits change.
| Platform | Length (official source) | Format | Where to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube Shorts | Up to 3 minutes | Square or vertical aspect ratio | YouTube Help, "Upload YouTube Shorts" |
| Instagram Reels | Multi-clip videos up to 3 minutes; Instagram says reels over 3 minutes won't be recommended to new audiences | Vertical, full-screen | About Instagram, Reels page |
| TikTok | Check the current limit in TikTok's upload settings | Vertical, full-screen | TikTok Support |
If one video goes to all three, edit it once for the shortest limit you care about and keep the hook, captions and call to action identical. If you plan and approve videos for clients, a shared calendar keeps versions straight; see this guide on choosing a social media management tool for agencies.
Which tool should you use for each editing task?
Use the simplest tool that handles the slow parts of your workflow automatically: silence removal and captions. Everything else, from transitions to effects, is optional for most service businesses.
| Task | Manual way | What to look for in a tool | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Removing silences | Split and delete each pause on the timeline | Automatic pause detection you can review and adjust | It's the most time-consuming step |
| Captions | Type each line and time it by hand | Automatic captions with easy line-by-line editing | Accurate captions reach viewers without sound |
| Text and graphics | Add each text layer by hand | Reusable templates and styles | Keeps every video on-brand |
| Pace and emphasis | Keyframe each zoom or speed change | Motions, transitions and speed curves applied for you | Adds energy without hours of keyframing |
| Writing | A separate document for the post caption | Help writing the post caption and on-screen text | Saves a context switch |
| Publishing | Export, move the file to the phone and upload | Scheduling straight from the editor | Removes the "download and re-upload" step |
How to do this in LUME Hub
LUME Cortex is LUME's short-video editor for Reels, Shorts and TikTok, for Macs with an Apple chip (M1 or newer) and macOS 26. It isn't available for Windows yet. You sign in with the same email and password as LUME Hub, and the app updates itself.
Every LUME Hub account can use the free version, with a Cortex watermark and up to three exported videos per month; it doesn't include AI or Instagram scheduling. The Pro plan removes the watermark and unlocks unlimited exports, the AI and scheduling, and the Agency plan has everything in Pro for up to 10 brands. Cortex is a separate subscription from the LUME Hub plans. One honest note: the LUME Hub app screens are in Portuguese today, and the product page explains every feature in English. You can start your 7-day LUME Hub free trial with no credit card, or see the LUME Hub plans.
Summary
To edit short form videos fast, plan the hook and the ending before recording, cut every silence and false start, add automatic captions and then correct them, keep text away from the app's buttons, use only music you have the right to use and export vertical within each platform's limit. YouTube says Shorts can be up to 3 minutes, and Instagram says reels over 3 minutes won't be recommended to new audiences. Batch your recording and editing so decisions are made once. Your next step: write the first and last sentence of your next three videos, record them in one session and edit them with one caption style.
Frequently asked questions
How long should a short-form video be?
As long as the message needs and within the platform's limit. YouTube says Shorts can be up to 3 minutes, and Instagram says reels over 3 minutes won't be recommended to new audiences. Cut anything that doesn't move the viewer toward the point or the call to action.
How do I remove silence from a video automatically?
Use an editor with automatic silence or pause removal, which detects quiet stretches in the audio and cuts them. Always watch the result once: automatic cuts can clip the start of a word or remove a pause you wanted for emphasis.
Are auto captions good enough for Reels and Shorts?
Not without review. The W3C's accessibility guidance says automatic captions don't meet user needs or accessibility requirements unless confirmed fully accurate, and gives examples of errors that change the meaning. Use them as a first draft and correct names, numbers and negatives.
Should captions be burned into the video?
For short-form social video, burned-in (open) captions are common because they show on every device and in every app. Open captions are always displayed and can't be turned off, while closed captions can be hidden by the viewer. Either way, they must be accurate.
Can I edit Reels on a laptop instead of my phone?
Yes. You can edit on a computer with a desktop editor, export a vertical file and upload it, or move it to your phone to post. Editing on a larger screen makes it easier to check captions and cuts frame by frame.
Does LUME Cortex work on Windows?
Not yet. LUME Cortex runs on Macs with an Apple chip (M1 or newer) and macOS 26. Windows users can follow the same workflow in this guide with another editor.
